REGISTER NOW  - This 3-week online mini-course begins on 2/10/16 and includes:

  • 30 min. of individual coaching with Joan Green
  • weekly online presentations (live and recorded)
  • email support
  • active private FB group to help with the hands-on practice between sessions and to provide additional resources for extended learning
  • weekly online Q & A session

If your child is challenged by day to day learning tasks and homework is too difficult or takes too much time, technology can help.

In this online mini-course, we will explore how to use computers, tablets and phones to support time-management, organization, learning and literacy at home. I will provide step-by-step guidance to help you become comfortable using products and features that will help your child overcome challenges.

We will discuss how to support your child's time-management and organization using products such as digital calendars, reminders, Google Drive and Google Keep. Next we will review features to support literacy, learning and language with tools that will read books and online text aloud, write words as you dictate them, offer writing supports such as word prediction and spelling/grammar support and record and sync what is said aloud in class as notes are written. We will also learn about tools to turn worksheets into a digital format so that your child can write or type their responses.

During each session we will also explore products and options on your devices and online sites to minimize distractions and promote safety.

  • I will share what I have learned from 30 years of experience helping families as a speech-language pathologist and technology specialist that you can apply to your unique situation at home to promote success, minimize distractions and keep children safe
  • Participate live or view the recordings when convenient for you, at a pace that optimizes your learning

  • Reduce family stress, minimize homework battles and promote independence

  • Connect and interact with others in similar situations and, hopefully, together we will create a learning community that will last well beyond the initial three weeks

Space is available for the first 15 individuals who register.

The cost is $197.00.

FAQ

  • What will I learn?

By the end of this mini-course, you will be on your way to using your computer and/or mobile devices (tablet and phone) to help with reading, writing, managing time and staying organized. Once you are comfortable using these tools on your own, you will be better able to help your child. You will have a framework and knowledge of features, strategies and specific technologies for moving forward.

  • Why should parents take this course when the media is filled with stories about all the harm that can happen if children use technology?

I agree that much harm can come from unrestricted access to online sites, social media and technology. However, our struggling students deserve to be exposed in a thoughtful way to everyday assistive technologies and strategies that have the potential to benefit them in life-changing ways. During the course I will provide information about how to help keep your children safe and minimize distractions.

  • What resources will I need?

You need a fast reliable internet connection to access this course on a computer or mobile device and an average of 30 minutes a day for 3 weeks.

  • What technology skills do I need?

This mini-course is designed for individuals who have a basic knowledge of using a computer, downloading content from the internet, creating online accounts and reading content as well as posting comments on social media.  Participants will be asked to create a Google account, download the Chrome browser and configure settings of devices and apps in order to explore new resources. The most important requirement for this course is that you have the desire to learn new skills and time to explore.

  • What if I can't attend the live lessons?

The live sessions will be recorded for all to view who are unable to attend live or who would like to review content. At the beginning of the course, I will also be contacting all who register to set up an individual 30-minute phone session for individualized guidance.

  • How do I know if this is the right course for me?

I developed this course with parents in mind, but it can be taken by all who want to learn more about using the features of their technologies to help with literacy, learning and executive functioning. Many of the parents who take the course will have children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia and specific learning challenges. However, there are also many parents who want to help their children who believe that their children are underperforming in school, aren't sufficiently motivated or seem scattered and disorganized. As I create this course, I have in mind the strategies and tools that would be appropriate for parents to use with kids who are in 5th grade and older.

  • What is the course format and schedule?
  1. 3 weekly online live interactive presentations on Wednesdays- 2/10 (2:00 PM),  2/17 (2:00 PM), and 2/24 (7:00 PM) The sessions will be recorded and available to view for the duration of the course.
  2. Suggestions for practice and implementation of specific tasks after each presentation
  3. Participation in a private online social group to which I will offer additional content and answer questions posted by all who register for the course
  4. Email support for four weeks
  • Will I be able to view all of the course at once to just find the resources I want to explore now?

No. This course is not meant to be used as a reference tool or online library of training tutorials. If you are clear about what you want to learn how to use now, it may be a better fit for you to search for an online video tutorial of that product or feature. This course was designed for parents who want to be shown resources that they may not realize exist as well as strategies for implementation with support along the way. The online classes are live and I will adapt to the needs of the group. The sessions are not recorded in advance. We will also all be connected in a private social group to learn from each other during the week.
