Learn about  top picks for apps, software, mainstream devices and accessibility features as well as online resources to enhance success and increase active engagement in activities

The workshop will emphasize how to use technology to both improve as well as compensate for areas of weakness. Participants will examine the basic functions of the devices and learn their strengths and weaknesses as well as the latest features of the operating systems and practie tips and tricks for using technology to meet the needs of diverse learners to help them show what they know as well as provide differentiated instruction. 

This intimate workshop is geared for families as well as professionals who want to help people who:

  • are unable to speak well;
  • have difficulty learning new information;
  • need help with reading and writing;
  • would benefit from techniques to promote more active engagement in the learning process;
  • could benefit from speech and language support, visual support and organizational tools; and
  • would like to learn more about cutting-edge affordable technologies they may not know exist.

The first 10 individuals to register will receive a free copy of Joan's latest book, Assistive Technology in Special Educaiton.

A boxed lunch is provided

Participants are encouraged to bring iPads, laptops and other mobile technologies for active learning. An emphasis will be placed on learning about iDevices and online resources. Android and Windows apps will be mentioned, but not highlighted during the day.

Approval is pending for this  CE program  by the Maryland Board of Examiners for Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-language pathologist for 4.5 CEUs.

  • Introduction
  • Demystifying the world of Apps, Access and Accessibility- with an emphasis on using the iPad   
     

930-10:15 AM

Verbal Expression and Auditory Comprehension

Apps and other AT solutions and strategies will be presented that focus on: articulation, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), phrase and sentence production, word retrieval, conversations. comprehension of words, sentences and questions said aloud, understanding concepts and using visual supports.

Reading and Writing
Apps and other AT solutions and strategies will be presented that focus on: Text to speech, speech to text, Bookshare, digital books, graphic organizers, recording devices, writing notes, drill and practice programs for reading, spelling and grammar, the “cloud” and suggestions for implementation.

Attention, Cognition and Executive Functioning
Apps and other AT solutions and strategies will be presented that focus on: organization, cognitive training, memory, visual /perceptual skills and strategies to ncreased engagement while learning.
